The film’s catchy musical number, Naatu Naatu, was awarded the best original song. The hit song was filmed in front of Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky’s official residence in 2021.
In the Best Original Song category, ‘Naatu Naatu’ was competing against – ‘Carolina’ (Taylor Swift) from Where the Crawdads Sing, ‘Ciao Papa’ (Alexandre Desplat, Roeban Katz, and Guillermo del Toro) – Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, ‘Hold My Hand’ (Lady Gaga, BloodPop, and Benjamin Rice) – Top Gun: Maverick and ‘Lift Me’ (Terms, Rihanna, Ryan Coogler, and Ludwig Göransson) – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
It is the first Asian song to win the Golden Globe honor. MM Keeravani in his acceptance speech thanked the team of RRR and his wife MM Srivalli. He said, “Thank you very much HFPA for this prestigious award, Golden Globe. I am very much overwhelmed with this great moment happening and I am very happy to share this excitement with my wife, who is sitting right there.”
Written and directed by SS Rajamouli, RRR, which stands for Rise, Roar, Revolt, is a historical fantasy that tells the rollicking story of two revolutionaries who fight against British rule in India – superstars Ram Charan and Jr NTR play the lead roles.
Why Naatu Naatu?
With team RRR campaigning for months to promote their film. Besides putting their film out for selection at international awards, RRR had its solid story and other elements of filmmaking working in its favor. The story and the narrative of the film forward. So it served a very specific purpose in the movie rather than being just a promotional song.
Scope for other Indian songs
Industry insiders believe India has rich music. Indian movies have had quite a few songs that also deserved recognition on international platforms. As Papon tells us. “Definitely, there are other songs. And such achievements (like Naatu Naatu winning Golden Globe). It should happen because there’s much better music, which I don’t know the West wasn’t opening up to, maybe? I hope in the coming years. We get such amazing music which has been coming out of Asia and India particularly. It is to go and reach the world stage.”\
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the accolades, calling the win. “A very special accomplishment!” and noting that, “This prestigious honor has made every Indian very proud.”
